The formation of germanium di-iodide was established by first pumping off the hydrogen, monogermane and hydrogen iodide from the reaction bulb and then adding an excess of hydriodic acid to the yellow residue in the bulb. This dissolved the substance and the filtered solution deposited, on cooling, yellow, feathery crystals6 of GeL.
